If you’re a low volume fax user on a Mac that doesn’t send or receive a whole lot of faxes but needs to be able to do either whenever necessary, you have 2 basic choices…

    1. Use the modem and live with some real functional limitations.
    2. Try the increasingly popular choice of using an Internet fax service.

Problems with using the built-in modem in your Mac:

Your Mac has to be on, and your modem has to have a phone line plugged in to receive a fax. If you’re expecting the call and you happen to be right next to your Mac, then great… Otherwise, you’re fresh out of luck when you need to receive a fax while you’re busy doing whatever it is you do.

Significant shortcomings in Mac’s attention to faxing.

It probably comes as no shock to you that Apple has never cared much about supporting more than the most rudimentary (even if fully functional) fax capabilities in Mac OSX. The same way you use the built-in fax is the way you’ll use an Internet fax, by the way. Same print and open/save dialog box actions.

With a Mac friendly Internet fax service like RingCentral, you get a dedicated fax number that can receive faxes any time, wherever you may be. If you’d like to have the freedom to receive a fax at any time and send a fax from any document you can print, then you should really check it out.

Your incoming faxes are sent to your email as a link, or PDF or TIFF attachment, or they can be viewed online inside your secure account.

You can send a fax from anywhere at anytime, even from your iPhone in the middle of NOWHERE. If you can send an email, you can fax anything.
